There are two types of shrimp frequently inhabit the water pools on Stone Mountain: Fairy Shrimp and Clam Shrimp.

The clear freshwater pools on the summit

are home to unusual Clam Shrimp. The tiny Clam Shrimp appear only during the rainy season and can remain dormant many years to survive until the next rains. Their eggs are surrounded by a tough shell withstanding conditions such as drying out and freezing.

The Stone Mountain fairy shrimp

(Branchinella lithaca), is a species of crustacean that was collected on Stone Mountain in 1940. Since then it has not been seen and it is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
