Architect John Calvin Portman, Jr.
Portman was born December 4, 1924 in Walhalla, South Carolina. He is known for having a large impact on the cityscape of Atlanta. Portman developed the Peachtree Center Complex, including the Portman-designed Hyatt, Westin and Marriott hotels.
Hyatt Regency & Polaris
The award winning Hyatt Regency hotel in Atlanta first opened in 1967. At this time it was the tallest building in Atlanta. Architect John Calvin Portman Jr. designed an open-air 22-story atrium with a revolving blue-domed rooftop restaurant that soon became a ‘must see’ tourist attraction. The Polaris restaurant closed in 2004 and was re-opened in June 2014 as part of a 65 million US Dollar renovation of the Hyatt Regency hotel. The Polaris has been totally gutted and redesigned by The Johnson Studio and utilizes rooftop bee garden to grow herbs and vegetables, including what may be the only actual peach tree on Peachtree Street.
